Dear participants of the “dCache Introduction Course”. |
In order to take part in our course without hassle, we strongly suggest
you to fulfill the following: |
- Bring a laptop with you, to be used for practical exercises. Due to the number of participants we won’t be able to supply you with any laptops. These will be used for the practical exercises which take a big share of the whole course.
We encourage you however (even those students with their own laptops) to
form teams up to three persons (two per team is probably the best).
- The laptop needs network connectivity via wireless LAN.
You’ll need internet connectivity in order to download the (most recent)
virtual machine images provided for the course.
Further, internet connectivity will be required in later exercises.
It might be possible to provide wired-LAN access for a limited number of
people, but we cannot guarantee this.
- Using GNU/Linux is suggested.
Although there’s no strong need for a specific operating system (we’ll
use virtual machines for the exercises) your tutors might have only
limited experience with non-GNU/Linux systems, when you need them to
help you with “external” Problems.
- VirtualBox must be installed.
All exercises will be carried out in a provided virtual machine image
for VirtualBox (http://virtualbox.org/).
Therefore you need an operating system and platform supported VirtualBox
to run images for the x86_32 platform.
The most recent version is recommended.
We strongly suggest you to install and try VirtualBox at home (you’ll
probably need some kind of “root”- or “administrator”-rights for this).
If you have problems, your tutors will try to help you during lunch time
on Tuesday of the GridKa School.
There will however be _no_ time for any help during the course itself!
Further information about VirtualBox and the installation procedure can
be found at:
http://gkswiki.fzk.de/index.php5/VirtualBox
The most recent virtual machine images can be found here:
http://gkswiki.fzk.de/index.php5/DCache_Administration_Workshop_(2010)#Images_for_VirtualBox
These will be updated if errors should be found.
- SSH client for “better” accessing the virtual machine.
It might be easier to access the virtual machine via a (or several) SSH
connections that with VirtualBox’ interface.
Therefore we recommend you to have a SSH client installed in your
operating system.
Information about how to connect to the SSH server inside the virtual
machine can be found at:
http://gkswiki.fzk.de/index.php5/VirtualBox#ssh-connection_to_the_virtual_machine
The course’s agenda, material, virtual machine images, et cetera can all be found at:

|
Keep in mind, that we’ll upload new versions in case we’d find some
errors lately.
|
Also, installing dCache is part of the course, so you’re not intended to
do this at home.
|
Yours,
Christoph Anton Mitterer
